How A Volcano Works

Hello. I was no where near finishing the song I planned on posting, so I locked myself in my room today and came up with this. I find it ironic that I am more satisfied with something I made in 1 day than with the other songs I have posted which seemed to have taken much longer. I think it is a sign that I am getting better at this. Hella Gems sucess story: thank you Hella Gems! I made this song entirely in Ableton. I used a couple free VSTs for the interlude: syntendo and toad.

10th St. at Rest

So, this is sort of unprecedented here, hopefully nobody objects...

I didn't have time to work on a Hella Gem these past couple of weeks because I was spending that time working on a short film for something called Campus Moviefest, where they give you some equipment, a Macbook and less than a week to turn in a finished film. I honestly had no idea what I was going to do and my prospective teammates bailed on me, so I went down 10th Street here in Atlanta at 3am last Sunday and shot some footage, hoping to find some sort of thread to tie it together. This film is the result:

10th St. at Rest

I'd really recommend going to YouTube and watching it in HD if your bandwidth permits, since by design most of the shots are long shots. I was actually going to put some music to it when it was finished but decided that the incidental sounds picked up by the camera were much more interesting.

Next time a real song of some sort...

Why Jackie

This is more of a tribute to JFK and Jackie K. I have a record of JFK speaches and tributes and stuff so I sampled that through a microkorg vocoder in the key of some chords that are in the song. the guitary sound is a pre recorded sample from a yamaha DJX keyboard and half of the beat was made in ableton and the other half was from a rhythm on the yamaha. That's it. I had so many problems tonight getting my computer and sound card to work, that I decided to stop where I did and finish the rest later, this was mostly an experiment with the vocoder and the record playing through it. PS sorry if the volume is too low.

hydrophone sounds

Fishing for Sounds

She told me she made a hydrophone by sealing a pair of earbuds with hot silicone. If we have our picnic near the port I can test the recording... but we couldn't get in the harbor. Which left the beach. She tried at the edge of the water, but I thought we should try submerging it more. Offered to doff my shoes and try. We got a new sound (entry) for sounds of barcelona and it was a good excuse to jump in the ocean.

med. sea at 3pm

This evening I tried to gussy it up a bit with some granulation and some comb filters, but I think she is a natural beauty fine how she is.

In this song I sampled music from the movie Santa Sangre and then added drums and keyboards. I played live drums, then cut them up, and sequenced them on Reason. Hope you enjoy this Spanish Gem!
