Post-apocalyptic Nightlife

December 9th 2008 by

I rarely make slow and quiet songs. In an effort to stretch my boundaries I created this song. It features a reversed vocal sample, and liberal use of delay. I added lots of clicking with Ableton's vinyl distortion effect. I also used a percussion sample, triggered semi-randomly, which was hooked to a random velocity effect.

It is a theme for lonely nights spent crossing wastelands, and resting in abandoned towns.

Swing

Here is a track of a piece I wrote several years ago for a video game I never made. I'm thinking about reusing it for another project. The original was simply a midi file called "swing.mid" because of it's rhythm.

This track of music represents a tranquil place. The hero finds a location that is magical and magestic so that it makes the hero forget about the tribulatiion that awaits outside.  I  endeavored to record this track with real instruments to give it some life.

Instead of the epic psuedo-symphonic music or else the J-pop/ new age music that is typically featured in an RPG, I thought it would be interesting to have an RPG with kind-of a late 60s/early 70s style psychodelic acid-fusion soundtrack. Something Like this track which I recorded earlier. I set out to record a version of this that fits the style somewhat.

The drums and a bass line are still sequenced.

I used my piano, for one. I ran it through my Pod Xt guitar pedal and came-up with a retro sounding effect with a limited frequency response and a detuning effect.

The lead is a mellotron clarinet.

I added a B section in a relative minor. This is to remind the player that everything is not right and the adversary still awaits outside.

The track ends abruptly because it is meant to loop. When I test it in my game engine, it loops pretty good but not entirly seamlessly.

Dracula Drums

I was planning to post a nerdcore song that I've been working on but I wasn't finished writing lyrics and I would have to borrow a mic. I didn't want to rush so I guess I'll post that next time.
For now I bring you a beat that I made in Ableton. I don't know what to say about the creative process for this song as this shit was haphazardly thrown together. I basically came up with the harpsichord sound and built from there.

hello, here is my song:

I don't know if I would call it a "beat" exactly. I made it on a loop pedal. I think that my music editing program doesn't currently exist or at least work. ENJOY BROS

Digital Love

Josh Lee, Brian Adams and I recorded this song a week or so ago.

I put one condenser mic on the piano that josh was playing.

I put one condenser mic on the acoustic guitar that Brian was playing and positioned it so it would also pick up some of the ride cymbal.

I put an sm58 mic on the kick that I was playing and an sm57 on the snare that I was also playing.

Then we went back in and recorded the overdubs.

I played bass and the electric guitars as well.

Josh performed the lead vocals.

We all chimed in for the beautiful backing vocals.

In conclusion we had a great time and it was the highlight of my week!
