Circulatory System

For this song I busted out my old groove box, and after playing with it for a while I was able to get some really cool sounds out of it. The drums are the only digital instrument in the song, everything else is either the groove box or the micro korg + some effects. For many parts of this song I chopped up the tracks by hand. For the crazy synth part I used a combination of chopping and the glitch plug in. I also doubled the track and used different settings for the glitch on each track to give it a wierd glitching in and out effect.

VA3 sings!

Ok, sorry for the late post!

This is the first successful test of ChucK -> MIDI -> my new keyboard, a Roland VA-3 that I bought from a coworker.

Everything seems to work rather smoothly. This proves that the problem in the earlier setup was not caused by ChucK or the MIDI system of my computer, but either by the loopback, VSTs, or the VST host.

Looking forward to exploring the cheesy options, this one has a big tone bank.

I have a few things coming together all at once, unfortunately none of them are in a really finished state, so I cobbled this together from something I threw together in Live 8 a few days ago. I was consciously trying to come up with an interesting bass sound* and a ridiculous sounding drum part**. The strings part sounds like a cousin to the Terminator theme. I patched the inner tube on my back bike tire today, hence the tubular (har har har!) name. It's a little repetitive, but it is better than nothing! :-p

* I used an instrument rack, layering three sounds... a sub bass, a more punch Juno-esque bass and a fuzzy, dirty bass.
** Those synth toms that come in halfway through leave me pretty chuffed.

Here's the live set (1.4MB, smaller than the mp3!) if anyone is interested (you'll need Live 8 Suite, and also the Pro-53 synth from NI if you want all the sounds).

A "Heartless" Review

I generally like Kanye West's music. I think he has done some really great songs. His production is often both catchy and interesting, and his raps can be very clever and enjoyable. That said, when I listened to his most recent album, "808s and Heartbreak," I was highly disappointed. I had been wanting for a while to record a dis track, because it sounded fun. My opinions are expressed in this song, which features me rapping over a beat I made out of samples from Kanye's hit "Heartless." I am not a rapper, but it was fun to dabble. Writing a good rap verse was actually harder than I thought it would be. The track is not really a full song - it only has one verse - but I was going for a sort of mixtape-style track anyway, so I think it works.

Enjoy.
